On January 29, the Chinese Embassy in South Africa grandly held the 2024 “Welcome the Spring Festival and Celebrate the Year of China” celebration in Times Square, the administrative capital, Pretoria. Mr. Chen Xiaodong, Ambassador to South Africa, Ms. Delilai, Minister of Tourism of South Africa, and Mr. Xie Shengwen, Ambassador of South Africa to China attended and delivered speeches. More than 800 people from all walks of life in South Africa, Chinese-funded institutions in South Africa, and representatives of overseas Chinese gathered together.
The Spring Festival belongs to China and the world. On December 22, 2023, the 78th United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to designate the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year) as a United Nations holiday. The upcoming Spring Festival in the Year of the Dragon will be the first United Nations national holiday. “Spring Festival Internationalisation”, Chinese culture attracts global attention.
On the same day, booths were also set up at the event to showcase Chinese culture, including calligraphy, paper-cutting art, tea ceremony, painting, Chinese national costumes and other Chinese cultural booths, allowing guests to understand the traditional culture of the Chinese Spring Festival. Ms. Delilay, Minister of Tourism of South Africa, and Mr. Xie Shengwen, South Africa’s Ambassador to China, praised the Kweichow Moutai booth for its multiple cultural displays of Chinese liquor culture, Chinese ethnic minority traditional clothing culture, and Western cocktail culture.
